"White Medicine Woman"

The Early Years

Rebecca Eliza Howe was a pioneer’s child

       Born in Nebraska in 1873

Macy and Cora were here sisters

And her brothers were Franklin & Willy

Except that Willy died when he was but five

       Diphtheria plagued her family

Twenty years before Rebecca’s father had lost

All his siblings to this dreaded disease

Orlando, as the only surviving child

       Of Rebecca’s grandfather Henry

Had lived when his sisters had died

       From the diphtheria disease

And, this is why my great-grandmother

       Was given the name Rebecca

She was named after both of his sisters

That’s why her middle name is Eliza

Rebecca's Father: Orlando Howe
